Major Recall Alert: Over 21,000 Western Star Trucks Recalled for Battery Defect
Truck owners and operators—take note. Daimler Truck North America has issued a significant recall affecting over 21,000 Western Star trucks due to a potentially dangerous battery installation issue. If you own or operate a Western Star 49X or 47X model, it’s time to check your VIN and pay close attention.
What’s the Issue?
The recall centers on a stud that connects the truck’s battery to the starter at the frame rail. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the stud may have been incorrectly installed, creating a risk of short circuits and, ultimately, fire hazards.
Models Affected:
-
Western Star 49X (Model years 2020–2026) – Approx. 9,500 units
-
Western Star 47X (Model years 2021–2026) – Approx. 12,000 units
While the total number of trucks included in the recall exceeds 21,500, Western Star estimates that only about 1% of them may actually have the defect.
Warning Signs to Watch For:
Drivers and fleet managers should look out for the following symptoms:
-
Slow or no crank during startup
-
Visible corrosion around the battery stud or cable lug
These signs could indicate that the battery connection issue is present — and potentially hazardous.
The Backstory:
The issue first came to light with reports of battery corrosion beginning in March 2023. A fire linked to the defect was reported in December 2023, followed by additional reports of melted cables in early 2024. Although the manufacturer initially believed the defect did not warrant a recall, a rise in incidents led to a renewed investigation.
To date, Western Star has received:
-
36 warranty claims
-
15 field reports
-
No reports of injuries or fatalities
Next Steps for Truck Owners:
As of May 29, Western Star has not yet issued a remedy or provided a schedule for notifying owners. However, if you believe your vehicle may be affected, it’s crucial to stay proactive.
